San Francisco, CA (May 4, 2025) – A deadly multi-vehicle collision occurred late Friday night on the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 on the Bay Bridge near the incline section, leaving one man dead and several others injured. The crash, involving four vehicles, was reported at approximately 11:15 p.m., prompting a joint response from California Highway Patrol and San Francisco police.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. A white Genesis sedan, reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, failed to slow down for congested traffic ahead and rear-ended a silver Toyota Corolla. The impact triggered a chain reaction: the Corolla collided with another silver Toyota, which in turn struck a gray Toyota, according to CHP’s preliminary findings.
An ambulance happened to be nearby and immediately stopped to help the victims. The driver of the silver Toyota Corolla sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not released his identity, but confirmed he was a male. A second person was also transported to the hospital with injuries, though their identity and role in the crash remain unclear.
The white Genesis driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. CHP officials stated that drugs and alcohol are suspected to be factors in the crash. Authorities are still working to determine the total number of individuals involved and whether any other injuries occurred.
The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for hours during the investigation and cleanup. All lanes were reopened just before 1:00 a.m. Saturday.
Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and all those impacted by this tragic incident.
DUI-Related Fatal Crashes on Bay Area Freeways
The Bay Bridge, a key connector between San Francisco and the East Bay, carries thousands of vehicles each day. High-speed traffic combined with limited visibility at night makes the incline portion of the bridge particularly dangerous—especially when impaired driving is involved.
According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, DUI-related crashes continue to be a leading cause of fatalities on California freeways, including those in the Bay Area. Rear-end collisions, especially at high speeds, often cause severe injuries and deaths, as seen in this tragic incident.
Late-night travel, such as this 11:15 p.m. crash, further increases risk due to fatigue, reduced traffic awareness, and higher likelihood of intoxicated drivers. Authorities urge drivers to avoid alcohol or drug use before getting behind the wheel and to always plan for alternate transportation when impaired.
After any fatal collision, especially one with suspected DUI involvement, it is critical that those affected seek legal and emotional support. Victims’ families may have grounds to pursue civil claims, particularly when negligence plays a role.
