San Diego, CA (April 28, 2025) – A motorcyclist sustained serious injuries Friday afternoon after a reported hit-and-run crash in the Otay Mesa area, according to officials with the San Diego Police Department. The collision occurred around 1:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of Otay Center Drive.
Authorities said the 51-year-old man was riding a 2020 Vento RY motorcycle when he was struck by a white Jeep that immediately fled the scene, heading northbound without stopping to render aid. The collision caused the rider to lose control and crash onto the roadway.
Emergency medical teams quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured rider to a local hospital. He suffered a fractured ankle and a dislocated shoulder as a result of the impact. Officials have not released additional details regarding the suspect vehicle or the identity of the motorcyclist.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to locate the driver involved in the hit-and-run.
Our thoughts are with the injured rider, and we wish him a full recovery.
Motorcycle Accidents in California
Incidents like the recent hit-and-run crash on Otay Center Drive highlight the extreme vulnerability motorcyclists face when sharing the road with larger vehicles. Without the protective barriers that cars and trucks provide, riders are at an increased risk of serious injuries — especially when collisions occur at higher speeds or when the responsible party flees the scene without offering assistance.
California consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of motorcycle accidents, and San Diego County, with its expansive road networks and heavy traffic volumes, sees a significant share of these incidents. Common causes include driver inattention, unsafe lane changes, and failure to yield the right-of-way to motorcyclists.
Victims of motorcycle accidents often endure prolonged recovery periods involving surgeries, rehabilitation, and significant medical expenses. When the at-fault driver flees, it complicates recovery even further, leaving victims and their families to seek justice through ongoing investigations and uninsured motorist claims.
Efforts to raise awareness about motorcycle safety, strengthen penalties for hit-and-run drivers, and promote public vigilance remain critical to protecting motorcyclists throughout the region.
