Plumas County, CA (April 8, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle crash involving major injuries was reported early Tuesday morning on State Route 70 (SR-70) just west of Rush Creek Rd, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident logs.

The crash occurred on a dangerous blind curve around 7:00 a.m. and involved a head-on collision between an Acura and another unidentified vehicle. Emergency responders, including fire crews and EMS, were quickly dispatched to the scene. The driver of the Acura reportedly sustained a head injury and was unable to self-extricate from the vehicle, prompting a coordinated rescue effort.

A medical flight crew was deployed and arrived approximately seven minutes after being dispatched. Two tow trucks were also requested to handle vehicles with major front-end damage. Animal control was called in response to a chihuahua found at the scene.

Due to the severity of the crash and the limited visibility on the curve, one-way traffic control was implemented. The roadway was fully reopened shortly after 9:00 a.m.

CHP has classified the crash as a Traffic Collision with Major Injuries (1180), and further investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this serious collision, and we hope for a full and swift recovery.

Mountain Roadway Safety and Head-On Collisions

Highway 70 through Plumas County is a scenic yet hazardous route, known for its winding curves, steep embankments, and limited line-of-sight in several sections. Blind corners, like the one near Rush Creek Rd, pose significant risks for head-on collisions, especially when drivers cross center lines or fail to reduce speed.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, rural highways like SR-70 see a disproportionate number of severe injury and fatal crashes due to these roadway characteristics. First responders in this region are trained to handle complex rescues involving prolonged extrication and air transport.

Motorists are strongly advised to drive cautiously on mountainous roads, reduce speeds in curving sections, and avoid distractions to minimize the risk of tragic collisions.
