Los Angeles, CA (May 13, 2024) – A tragic collision late Sunday night in the Westlake district left one man dead and another critically injured after they were struck by a vehicle that had collided with another car at a busy intersection. The incident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of Eighth Street and Alvarado Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Investigators reported that a vehicle was heading southbound on Alvarado Street when it collided with a second vehicle traveling westbound on Eighth Street. The force of the impact caused the southbound vehicle to spin out of control, careen onto the southwest sidewalk of the intersection, and strike two adult male pedestrians standing near the corner.

Emergency responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived promptly at the scene and provided lifesaving treatment to both victims. The two men were transported to a nearby hospital, where one of them—a 45-year-old—was later pronounced dead. The other man sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

As of this time, authorities have not disclosed whether the drivers involved in the initial collision sustained any injuries. The LAPD has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and has not yet confirmed if impairment or speed played a role.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased victim. We also send our thoughts for strength and recovery to the man who remains in critical condition.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

Sunday night’s fatal crash in Westlake serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers pedestrians face even while standing on sidewalks. Urban intersections like Eighth and Alvarado see high volumes of both foot and vehicle traffic, especially in densely populated areas of Los Angeles. When cars lose control after a collision—particularly at late hours—pedestrians are left vulnerable to devastating consequences.

In California, pedestrian fatalities have risen over the past decade, with urban areas accounting for the majority of these incidents. Crashes involving pedestrians often stem from high-speed driving, failure to yield at intersections, distracted driving, and impaired operation of a vehicle. The aftermath of such events typically includes severe injuries or death, with families left to cope with grief and unexpected medical or funeral expenses.

Pedestrian safety is a growing concern for city planners and public safety officials in Los Angeles. Programs to improve crosswalk visibility, implement traffic calming measures, and increase driver awareness are vital—but they cannot prevent all tragedies. That’s why it’s essential for those affected by these incidents to understand their rights and seek support when needed.
