Los Angeles, CA (May 26, 2025) – A 42-year-old man was left in critical condition following a structure fire that erupted early Monday morning in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The blaze broke out around 5:45 a.m. on May 26, 2025, in the 900 block of South Dewey Avenue. Firefighters responded swiftly and successfully rescued the man from the burning structure. He was transported to a local trauma center with life-threatening injuries, including second- and third-degree burns covering over 50% of his body.

In addition to the extensive burns, officials said the man also suffered from serious complications related to smoke inhalation. Authorities confirmed the man is currently experiencing homelessness and may have been sheltering inside the structure at the time of the fire.

No other injuries were reported, and the fire was contained shortly after crews arrived. However, the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined and remains under active investigation by fire officials.

Our thoughts are with the injured individual as he fights for his life, and we commend the first responders for their quick actions in rescuing him from the fire.

Fire Safety Risks Among Unhoused Populations in Urban Los Angeles

This tragic incident in Koreatown highlights a critical and growing concern in Los Angeles: the vulnerability of unhoused individuals to fire-related injuries. With limited access to safe shelter, many people experiencing homelessness are forced to take refuge in vacant buildings, alleyways, or temporary structures—locations that often lack proper fire prevention systems such as smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, or emergency exits.

Injuries from structure fires, especially those involving second- and third-degree burns and inhalation trauma, carry an extremely high risk of long-term complications or fatality. Victims often face not only physical recovery challenges but also systemic barriers to accessing follow-up care and long-term housing stability.

Koreatown, one of the most densely populated areas in Los Angeles, has seen a rise in structure fires related to homelessness and unsafe sheltering conditions in recent years. These situations point to a broader need for coordinated responses involving fire prevention, public health outreach, and emergency housing access.

For individuals affected by such incidents, the path to recovery is complex. Specialized medical treatment, psychological support, and long-term care planning are often necessary—and frequently out of reach without intervention and advocacy.
