Atwater, CA (June 3, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision involving a suspected impaired driver claimed the lives of a 20-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child Sunday night in Atwater. The fatal crash occurred around 10:35 p.m. on June 1, 2025, at the intersection of Southern Pacific Ave and Commerce Ave, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Merced office.

Authorities arrested 19-year-old Moises Haven Castillo of Catheys Valley on multiple charges, including hit-and-run, following the devastating incident. Investigators determined that a combination of excessive speed, alcohol impairment, and failure to stop at the intersection contributed to the deadly crash.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene but were unable to save the two victims. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to gather more details surrounding the collision.
