Riverside Transit Rear End Bus Accident Injuries

Bus accident injuries are common and can be devastating. A recent bus accident in Riverside resulted in a fiery crash that proved fatal for one of the motorists involved. While police continue to investigate the underlying causes of the accident, failure on the part of the bus driver to stop for congested morning traffic is to blame for a pile up that involved multiple other vehicles.

Fatal Bus Accident in Riverside Involves Multiple Vehicles

Heavy traffic during Monday morning rush hour was a contributing factor in a fatal multi-vehicle accident involving a Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) bus in Murrieta recently. According to an October 28, 2019 news report by The Press Enterprise, the crash left one motorist dead and six others suffering serious injuries.

The accident happened on the 215 Freeway, in the southbound lanes just before 6:00 a.m. The RTA driver was alone in the bus and traveling in the fast lane when he encountered commuter traffic delays. While other motorists slowly came to a stop on the busy freeway, the bus driver apparently failed to notice. He continued driving and plowed into the rear end of a 2006 Toyota Tundra stopped in front of him. The force of the impact pushed the vehicle forward and to the right, causing him to crash into the rear of a Nissan Sentra directly in front of him and then into a Ford  F-250 truck in the opposing lane.

The Toyota truck caught fire as a result of the collisions and came to a stop facing northbound in the southbound lanes, blocking other traffic. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Menifee, died at the scene. Drivers and passengers in the other vehicles were injured, as well, and taken to local hospitals complaining of back and neck pain. While investigators know that the bus driver’s failure to stop was the ultimate cause of the crash, they are continuing to look into contributing factors that may have been involved.

Contributing Factors in Rear End Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear end crashes are the most common type of car accident. When these collisions involve larger, heavier vehicles, such as buses or trucks, they can easily result in life-threatening injuries for other motorists.

Heavy traffic, adverse weather, and poor road infrastructure can all play a role in rear end car, bus, or truck accidents, but it is generally the actions of drivers which are to blame. Reckless driving behaviors that make rear end collisions more likely to occur include:

  • Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
  • Running red lights or disregarding other traffic signals;
  • Aggressive driving behavior, such as tailgating and improper passing;
  • Distracted driving, such as using cell phones or texting;
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
