San Jose, CA (May 18, 2025) – A crash at the interchange of U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 280 in San Jose claimed the life of a motorcyclist early Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 1:53 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Reports indicate that a motorcycle was positioned on the right shoulder of the freeway when a Cadillac traveling on the same route veered off the roadway and struck the motorcyclist. The impact propelled the vehicle across multiple lanes of traffic before it collided with the center divider.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. Despite their efforts, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash.
Authorities confirmed that the Cadillac driver is suspected of operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The driver’s condition and identity have not yet been publicly released, and no arrests have been officially announced at this time.
The area was closed for several hours as officers conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage from the freeway. Additional information is expected as the case develops.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
DUI and Motorcycle Fatalities in California
Motorcycle riders face significant risks every time they take to the road, particularly in areas where impaired driving remains a concern. The tragic crash at the junction of US-101 and I-280 in San Jose highlights the dangers riders encounter when others engage in reckless behaviors like driving under the influence.
In California, over 5,000 DUI-related collisions are reported each year, and many of those incidents involve motorcyclists—who are far more exposed than drivers in passenger vehicles. Data from the California Office of Traffic Safety shows that impaired driving remains one of the top contributors to roadway fatalities across the state. Crashes that involve a driver crossing multiple lanes or losing control, as seen in this case, are often catastrophic for anyone nearby.
Victims of DUI crashes—or their families—often face long-term consequences beyond the immediate physical impact. These may include funeral expenses, psychological trauma, and the need to pursue legal actions to seek justice and financial recovery. In fatal motorcycle collisions, it is especially important for surviving family members to understand their legal rights and the support systems available to them.
Ensuring accountability for impaired drivers is critical for public safety and prevention. In addition to criminal proceedings, civil claims may be pursued by victims’ families to secure compensation for their losses.
